The Queen’s Park stroll, a Christmas tradition in Barbados since 1907.

Christmas in Barbados is not unlike many places in the world. Just switch the cold and snow to sun and sand and the traditions are somewhat similar. First of all, the house has to be spruced up, maybe some fresh paint and new curtains for sure. There are church services, traditional Christmas music about winter wonderlands and sleigh bells, (very Caribbean) special food and drink, decorated trees and presents. One of our special traditions that dates back to 1907, is the annual Christmas stroll through Queen’s Park in the capital of Bridgetown. The park was established in 1780 and the main house was the residence of the commanding general of the British troops in the West Indies.

Christmas morning for most starts with a 5:00 am church service. Afterwards, patrons arrive at the park dressed in their finest threads to meet and mingle with friends and loved ones, to see and be seen and also to listen and dance to the sweet sounds of the Barbados Police Service Band. The local gospel band “Promise” performs as well. The festivities run from about 6:00 am to 11:00 am.

The Barbados Police Service Band was formed in 1889 and is one of the oldest police bands in the world. They perform many concerts locally, and have toured many Caribbean islands, U.K., Canada and Germany.

Some members of a Gentlemans’ social club have arrived, the fashion show officially begins.

The following are more scenes as captured by local photographer Himal Reese.

This is always a fun and different way to celebrate Christmas in a tropical setting. If you plan to travel to Barbados for the Holidays, you should consider adding this event to your itinerary. Please tell us about some of the unusual and special traditions you have in your countries. See you next time.
