Discover Aghroud Surf Beach: Morocco’s Colorful Coastal Gem

Reading time four minutes

Situated along Morocco’s stunning coastline between Agadir and Essaouira, Aghroud Surf Beach is not only a paradise for surfers but also a feast for the eyes. The charming, colorful houses lining the beachfront add a unique energy to the serene landscape, creating a perfect blend of art, culture, and coastal beauty. This wasn’t part of our itinerary, but our guide recommended we do a quick stop to check it out; so glad we did.

As we made our way along the scenic coastal road north of Agadir, (National Rte 1), the landscape shifted dramatically, rolling hills met the vast Atlantic, with rugged cliffs and wild surf. Aghroud, a small seaside village, welcomed us with its laid-back charm and breathtaking ocean views. The air carried a faint scent of salt, mingling with the earthy aroma of the surrounding argan trees. As we drew closer and exited our vehicle, the smell of freshly baked traditional Moroccan bread filled the air.

The village houses are painted in a wide range of bright colours—shades of blue, yellow, pink, and green that contrast beautifully with the golden sands and deep azure of the Atlantic Ocean. Once a modest coastal settlement, the Rainbow village as it’s sometimes called, has evolved into an artistic haven, thanks to a collaboration between local artists and residents. Each home tells a story, reflecting the personalities of the locals who live within them. Some buildings are adorned with intricate murals, transforming them into living pieces of art that celebrate Morocco’s rich heritage and love for expressive design. A coastal retreat housed inside an open-air art gallery is how I would describe it.

Beyond their artistic appeal, the colorful houses of Aghroud symbolize the warmth and hospitality of the people who call this village home. The open doors and welcoming smiles from locals invite visitors to experience true Moroccan generosity. Many homes double as small guesthouses and surf schools. Beachfront cafés serve traditional Moroccan fare, including fragrant tajines, fresh seafood, and the ever-present mint tea—a staple of Moroccan hospitality.

Aghroud Surf Beach with its miles of coastline, impressive surf and unspoiled conditions, attracts wave lovers from around the world. The surf culture has shaped the aesthetics of the village, inspiring locals to embrace bold, eye-catching designs that reflect the free-spirited nature of their laid-back coastal lifestyle. Whether you’re spending some days here or just passing through, the charm of this village will leave an everlasting impression.

Aghroud Beach Village isn’t just a haven for surfers and travelers—it’s a place where traditions thrive, especially in the kitchen. One of the most cherished customs here is baking bread, an art passed down through generations and deeply connected to Moroccan culture. The flour for these special breads comes from locally grown wheat, which is hand harvested, stone ground and is all organic.

The Heart of the Village: The Traditional Oven

At the heart of the village, small communal ovens glow with warmth as locals gather to bake their daily bread. These rustic clay ovens, known as furns, have been used for centuries, producing loaves with a crispy golden crust and a soft, airy inside. These round, flat breads are a staple in Morocco and are served at every meal. As a lover of good bread, the scent of the freshly baked khobz was very inviting.

Before departing, we stopped and chatted with a few of the ladies who were baking and purchased a few loaves fresh from the oven. Honestly, some of the best bread I’ve ever tasted.

We’ve had nothing but great experiences during our trip and highly recommend taking a look at this very underrated country, you’ll be pleasantly surprised.

  1. As an avid ocean and surf lover, I’ve always wanted to explore more of Morocco’s coast and catch a few waves. One of the places I had on my travel wish list was Taghazout, but it looks like I have to add Aghroud to the list, too. Thanks for sharing, and have a good day 🙂 Aiva xx
